Finished Items Woven Sashes & Garters   8508

General Description:
Woven sashes, head wraps, and garters were introduced into the Native cultures of the Great Lakes by the French-Canadian voyagers that plied the trade routes in the region. They quickly became popular trade items to both fur trappers and Native people there. Trading companies commissioned both European immigrants and, later, Indian women to fingerweave these sashes. Within the Native cultures, fingerweaving developed into intricate patterns and styles, and spread throughout the east. In the mid- 1800’s trading companies turned to machine weaving these sashes and commonly used the design made by weavers at L’Assomption , Quebec. These authentic reproductions of the machine woven Assumption Sash and Garters are offered in both a red and a blue design.
